Guide

How to set up your Sigil card, make it yours, and what the Discord bot can do. Every page here is free to read, whether or not you're signed in.

1. Getting started

Press Login with Discord on the home page. Sigil only asks Discord who you are (your name and picture). It never sees your password or your messages.
After signing in you're taken to your card. Its address is getsigil.me/u/ followed by your Discord username, and it's public: anyone with the link can see it.
A new card is empty. Use Edit card to add boxes, and Edit profile for your name, picture, colours and tags.
Put your card in your bio. Once your card has something on it, a tip above it shows your link with a Copy link button. Paste it into your Discord About Me (User Settings, then Profiles) and the bios on Twitch, YouTube, X or Steam, so people who find you can find your card. The bot's /link command gives you the same link.

2. Building your card

Your card is made of boxes that you place yourself. Open it with Edit card on your card page.

Your card already starts with a profile box and a tags box, so there's something to build on from the moment you sign in. Add widget opens the list of other boxes; pick one and it appears on the grid.
Move a box by dragging its top bar. Resize it by dragging a side or the bottom-right corner.
Edit on a box changes what's inside it, and Remove takes it away.
Press Save to publish. The status next to the button says Saved. Nothing changes for visitors until you save.
You can have up to 12 boxes on a card.
On a phone, small boxes sit two to a row and big ones take the full width, in the same top-to-bottom order. Rearranging is easiest on a computer.

Free accounts have one card. Premium accounts can keep up to 3 presets, which are saved layouts you can switch between: one is live (what visitors see) and you can name, copy or delete the others.

3. The boxes you can add

Profile card: Your avatar, name, bio and links. Uses your name, avatar and bio from Edit profile. One per card.
Tags: Your games, shows, music and more. Pick which categories to show. You choose which categories it shows. Up to 3 per card.
My jam: Your favourite song from Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music or SoundCloud. Paste a link to one song. Works with Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, SoundCloud. Only the song itself is saved.
Media: A photo or artwork of your own. Premium members can also use a moving GIF. JPG, PNG, GIF or WebP up to 8 MB. Moving GIFs are a Premium feature. Up to 6 per card.
Carousel: Several of your own pictures that swap on their own, one at a time.
Friends: Your Sigil friends. Shows some of your friends. One per card.
Text: A note in your own words: a status, a shoutout, or anything you like. An optional heading (up to 40 characters) and up to 500 characters of plain text. Links won't be clickable. Up to 4 per card.
Social links: The platforms you've linked, as clickable icons.
Social links (list): The platforms you've linked, as a full list with the handle shown next to each.
Comments: A place for people to leave a note on your card.

4. Your profile settings

Open Edit profile from your card page. Everything is saved with the Save button at the bottom.

Avatar: Use your Discord picture, upload your own (it's cropped to a square), or show no picture.
Display name and bio: The display name (up to 32 characters) is shown instead of your Discord username. The bio can be up to 300 characters.
Accent colour: Sets the colours of your card's highlights and outlines.
Widget opacity: How solid your boxes are. Lower numbers let your page background show through; text and pictures always stay clear.
Fonts Premium: Pick a font for your whole card and a different one just for your bio, from 12 fonts.
Page background: Choose one of 10 colours or 10 gradients for free. Premium members can use a picture instead, still or animated. While a picture is showing it covers the colour. Each preset has its own background, so switching the live preset changes it too.
Social links: Type just your handle for any of these: Twitch, YouTube, Steam, X, GitHub, Instagram, TikTok, Bluesky, Reddit, Kick, SoundCloud, Xbox, PlayStation, AniList, MyAnimeList, Last.fm, Ko-fi. Sigil builds the link for you, and a handle that doesn't fit that site's rules is refused, so a link can never point somewhere else.

5. Tags

Tags say what you're into: games, shows and anime, music, movies, hobbies, languages, your time zone and more. There are 18 categories with hundreds of choices in each.

On Edit profile, open a category and tick what fits. Use the search box at the top of a long list to find things fast.
You can pick up to 50 in each category. The button shows how many you've ticked.
Tags only appear on your card once you add a Tags box and choose which categories it should show.

6. Friends

Press Add friend on someone's card. If you're signed out you're asked to sign in first and then brought back.
Or open the Friends page and use Find someone: paste their Discord ID (in Discord, turn on Developer Mode, right-click them, Copy User ID) or the link to their card. It finds people by ID only, never by name. Once you have 6 or more friends, a box above your list narrows it down as you type.
Requests you send and receive are on the Friends page in the top bar, with a number when something is waiting.
Accept or decline a request there. You can also cancel one you sent, or remove a friend later.

7. Reporting and staying safe

Your card and the pictures on it are visible to anyone with the link, so only add things you're happy to share.
See something that breaks the rules? Use the small flag on a picture, or Report at the top of a card. Moderators review reports.

8. Free and Premium

Building and sharing a card is free. Premium adds presets (each with its own background), picture backgrounds, animated GIFs, custom fonts, an entrance card and signature reactions, plus some bot extras: a voice channel on your /lfg groups, a detailed /matchme breakdown and your card as a picture. 9. The Discord bot

Sigil also has a Discord bot that brings your card into your servers. Type / in a server that has it to see the commands. This list is the bot's own list, so it is always up to date.

`/setup channel reactions [welcome] [confess]` Admins	For people who manage the server: chooses the channel where Sigil's welcome cards are posted, and turns on Premium members' signature reactions (the reactions option must be True, so Premium members are never limited). Sigil's other commands only work in a server once this has been done, and it can be run again to pick a different channel. welcome:False turns off the welcome message: a hello with a Wave button and a "What do you play?" step, posted in that channel when someone joins. It is on for servers set up from now on; a server set up earlier keeps it off until you turn it on with welcome:True. confess opts this server into /confess: choose the channel anonymous confessions are posted in (leave it out to leave that choice as it is - /confess stays off until a channel is chosen). `/profile [user] [image]`	Shows a Sigil card in the channel: name, bio, favourite things and links, with a button to open the full card. Leave the user out to show your own. With Premium, image:True shows the card as a picture instead, drawn on that person's own background. Without Premium you get the usual card and a private note about it.	Everyone in the channel
`/link`	Gives you the link to your own card and to the page where you edit it. Only you see the answer.	Only you
`/matchme [user] [detailed]`	With a user: compares your card with theirs and shows what you have in common, in the channel. Without one: finds the people in this server who match you best, and everyone in the channel sees the answer. That needs "Let /matchme suggest me" switched on in Edit profile, and only people who switched it on are suggested. With Premium, detailed:True adds a full breakdown, category by category, of what you share and what you don't. Without Premium you get the usual answer and a private note about it. `/vibe first second`	A fun compatibility check for any two people who have Sigil cards: a percentage, a few words on how well they go together, and what they have in common. Shown in the channel. Works with any two people; it never pings them.	Everyone in the channel
`/lfg game [players] [note] [when] [ping] [voice]`	Posts a looking-for-group message in the channel. People press Join, and it shows your playstyle, platform and region from your card. You can say when you start (now, in 15 or 30 minutes, or in an hour) and pick a role to ping (only roles the server lets everyone mention). With Premium you can also pick the voice channel to meet in, which people click to join. When the last place is taken, everyone in the group is pinged together with the start time and the voice channel. The post closes by itself after 2 hours, or when you press Close, and its card then shows that it ended.	Everyone in the channel
`/groups`	Lists the groups in this server that are still looking for players, with a link to each post. Only you see the answer.	Only you
`/spy`	Starts a round of Spy in the channel: press Join to play, and once at least 3 people have, the host presses Start (or Close to cancel; the lobby also closes on its own after 5 minutes if it hasn't started). Everyone gets the same word by DM except one random impostor, who gets none. Then it's one word at a time: the card shows whose turn it is, and posting in the channel is your word - once everyone's gone, vote below for who you think the impostor is. Catch them and the game ends; vote out someone else and whoever's left goes again - it keeps looping until the impostor is caught or only two players remain. The host can press End game at any point to stop early.	Everyone in the channel
`/spyend`	Ends the round of Spy you're hosting right now, wherever it's at - the same as pressing End game, for when the card has scrolled out of sight in a busy channel. Only works on a game you started. Only you see the answer.	Only you
`/icebreaker`	Posts a random icebreaker question in the channel, from Sigil's own list plus any this server's admins added with /promptadd.	Everyone in the channel
`/truthordare choice`	Posts a random truth or dare in the channel, from Sigil's own list plus any this server's admins added with /promptadd.	Everyone in the channel
`/icebreakerauto times [channel] [ping]` Admins	For people who manage the server: posts an icebreaker question on its own, once or twice a day, picked the same way /icebreaker picks one. times:Off turns it off again. channel is required the first time it's turned on (and can be changed later); ping is an optional role to mention alongside the question, for example a "chat revive" role. `/promptadd kind` Admins	For people who manage the server: adds one of your own questions to this server's pool for /icebreaker, /truthordare or /confess, on top of Sigil's own list. Opens a short box to type it in. Stays local to this server, and is removed if Sigil ever leaves. Only you see the answer.	Only you
`/confess [prompt]`	Opens a box to write something anonymously, in your own words - blank by default. prompt:True fills it with a random idea from the shared bank instead, if you're stuck for what to write (you can still change it to anything). Posted in this server's confession channel with no name attached; nothing on Discord ever shows who wrote it. Needs an admin to have chosen a confession channel first (/setup ... confess:#channel). Only you see the confirmation.	Only you
`/stick message` Admins	For people who manage the server: pins your message to the bottom of this channel. Anytime someone else posts, Sigil deletes the old copy and posts a fresh one below it (at most once every 5 seconds, so a busy channel isn't spammed with deletes and reposts). Replaces any sticky already in this channel; mentions in it never ping anyone, even when it moves. Use /unstick to remove it.	Everyone in the channel
`/unstick` Admins	For people who manage the server: removes this channel's sticky message, if it has one. Only you see the answer.	Only you
`/level [user]`	Shows a level card in the channel: your progress to the next level, your friend count and how long you've been on Sigil. Leave the user out to show your own. Whenever an action gives you enough XP to level up, the bot shows this same card the next time you send a message, wherever that happens to be.	Everyone in the channel
`/leaderboard`	Shows the highest Sigil levels among the people in this server, best first. The bot can't list a server's members, so this only finds people who both have a Sigil card and have earned some XP.	Everyone in the channel
`/help`	Lists the commands. Works before the server is set up. Only you see the answer.	Only you
`/ping`	Checks that the bot is awake. It answers "Pong!". Works before the server is set up.	Everyone in the channel
`Right-click a message, then Apps, then Sigil: Quote card`	Turns that message into a picture in the style of its author's Sigil card, showing who quoted it. It is posted in the channel. People can switch this off for their own messages in Edit profile.	Everyone in the channel

Signature reactions Premium

Premium members can pick up to 3 emoji, on Reactions on their card page, and the bot adds them to their messages in servers that have set up Sigil. The bot only learns that you posted (who and where, never what you wrote), and it adds them to at most one message every few seconds. You can choose from standard emoji and from our support server's own emoji. Switch it off any time.

Quote cards

In a server with the bot, right-click any message, choose Apps, then Sigil: Quote card. The bot turns that message into a picture in the style of its author's Sigil card (their colours and avatar, and a gem if they're Premium), says who quoted it, and posts it in the channel. It can't quote messages from bots or messages with no text. If you'd rather nobody quotes you, switch off Let people turn my messages into quote cards on Edit profile, and the bot will refuse.

The welcome message

When someone joins a server that has Sigil set up (and its admins haven't turned it off with /setup welcome:False), the bot posts a short hello in the welcome channel and pings the new member once. Under it are two buttons. Wave: anyone in the server can press it; the welcome shows who waved, and the newcomer is told about the first wave. What do you play?: a box opens where they type up to three games (however they spell them; the bot matches them to Sigil's list). The bot then shows them, privately, who else in the server plays those games. Nothing is saved unless they press Show me to others here. Then their name is shown next to those games in that server only, and they can press Take me off the list at any time. They are removed automatically when they leave the server, or after 90 days. Signing in to Sigil afterwards starts a new card with those games already filled in. Premium members with an entrance card get it in the same message.

Entrance cards Premium

Premium members can design an entrance card: a picture with your name, a line of your own words, a background and your avatar. The background can be one of the colours or your own page background picture (a GIF shows its first frame). Build it on your card page with Entrance card and switch it on. When you join a server that has Sigil set up, the bot posts it in that server's welcome channel. It's only posted for Premium members who have switched it on, only in servers whose admins have run /setup, and never more than a few times a minute in one server. Switch it off any time. A moderator can clear the words on it, like the text on your card. (Arabic and Hebrew names don't draw correctly on the picture yet.)

Setting the bot up in your server

For people who manage a server. Sigil's commands only work in a server once someone who manages it has chosen a channel for the bot's welcome cards, so nothing runs in a server without an admin having decided it should.

Add the bot to your server. You need the Manage Server permission there.
Someone who manages the server types /setup channel:#a-channel reactions:True and picks the channel. The reactions option must be True: it lets Premium members' signature reactions work, so Sigil never limits them. The bot needs to be allowed to View Channel, Send Messages, Embed Links, Attach Files, Add Reactions, Read Message History and Use External Emojis there. If it isn't, /setup says which.
Optionally add welcome:False or welcome:True to choose whether the bot posts a welcome message when someone joins. It is on for servers set up from now on; a server set up before it existed keeps it off until an admin turns it on.
From then on the commands work. Running /setup again picks a different channel.

Until then, everything except /setup, /help and /ping answers with a note that the server isn't set up. If the chosen channel is deleted, the commands pause until /setup is run again. The welcome cards themselves are still being built. In a private chat with the bot there is no server, so /profile, /link and /matchme @person work there.

Matching

/matchme @person compares your card with theirs and shows what you have in common, with a percentage. The percentage is how much of the shorter list of picks you share, so a small card and a huge card can still match well. It only uses what both cards already show, so it works for anyone with a card.

/matchme on its own goes further: it looks through the people in the server you use it in for your best matches. Because that lists people to each other, it is opt-in. Switch on Let /matchme suggest me to other people in Edit profile. You can then search, and you can be suggested to others in the servers you share. While it's off, nobody is suggested you, and you can't search. Everyone in the channel sees the answer (people's names and links to their cards), and it never pings anyone. It has to be used in a server, and that server has to be set up (see above).

Premium /matchme detailed:True (with or without a person) adds a full breakdown, category by category: what you both chose, what only you chose and what only they chose, and how well each category matches. Without Premium you get the usual answer, and a private note with a link to the Premium page.

/vibe first second is the fun version: pick any two people who have cards and it shows a percentage, a few words on how well they go together, and what they have in common. It never pings them.

Looking for group

/lfg game:Valorant players:2 note:gold rank, evenings posts a message in the channel. Others press Join, and you're told when someone does. It shows your playstyle, platform, region and time zone from your card (if you've filled those in) so people know who they're joining. You can press Close when you have enough, and it closes by itself after 2 hours, when its card changes to show it has ended. You can have one open post at a time: a new one closes your older one.

when: right now (the default), or in 15 minutes, 30 minutes or an hour. The card shows the start time in each person's own time zone.
ping: a role to ping, such as the one for your game. It only works for roles the server lets everyone mention; otherwise you're told it wasn't pinged.
voice Premium: the voice channel to meet in. It shows on your post, and people click it to join. If you leave it out and you're in a voice channel, Premium members' groups use that one. Without Premium the group is still posted, and the bot tells you privately that the voice channel is a Premium feature.

When the last place is taken, the bot pings everyone in the group once, with the start time and, if there is one, the voice channel. If someone leaves, the bot says so (without pinging anyone) and the place opens up again. /groups lists the groups in the server that are still looking for players, with a link to each post. Only you see the answer.

10. Something's not working

Discord won't let me sign in. If Discord says "verify your account", verify your email in Discord, turn off any VPN (some browsers, such as Opera GX, have a built-in one), or try another browser.
My changes aren't showing. Did you press Save? Then reload the card page.
A picture or GIF was refused. The message says why: it may be too big, not a real picture, or a moving GIF on a free account.
Anything else. Use the contact address on the Privacy page.
