Add Sigil to your server

Add the bot, run /setup once, and decide what you want on. Five minutes, and every choice is optional.

Sigil is one Discord bot that does the jobs a server usually spreads over five or six: welcome messages, roles, counters, scheduled posts, games and more. This page gets it into your server and ready to use.

Before you start

You need the Manage Server permission in the Discord server you want to add Sigil to. If you own the server, you have it.

Step 1: add the bot

  1. Go to getsigil.me/invite. Discord opens its own "add to server" page.
  2. Pick your server and press Authorise.
  3. Discord lists the permissions Sigil asks for. Leave them all ticked unless you have a reason not to; the permissions page says what each one is for. The only one you can safely untick is Manage Roles, and then role menus, colour roles and auto-roles will not work.

You do not need to give Sigil Administrator. It never asks for it.

Step 2: run /setup

In any channel of your server, someone who manages the server types:

/setup

That is the only required step. It tells Sigil that an admin has decided it should run here, and from that moment the server tools work: welcome messages, auto roles, colour roles, role menus, counters and the rest. Until /setup has been run those answer with a note that the server is not set up.

You do not have to wait for it to play. The games (Weave, /spy, /bomb, /keepup, /lfg, /icebreaker, /truthordare) and your own commands (/profile, /link, /vibe, /remind, /birthday) work in any server straight away, for everyone. When Sigil joins, the hello it posts has three buttons: Play Weave here, Set up Sigil (the same as /setup) and Welcome new members here (sets up the server and makes that channel the welcome channel). The last two are for people who manage the server.

Everything else /setup can do is optional, and you can run it again any time. Leaving an option out keeps what the server already has.

Option What it does
channel:#a-channel Turns on welcome cards. It is where the welcome message and Supporters' entrance cards are posted when someone joins.
cards:False Turns welcome cards off again.
welcome:False or welcome:True Turns just the hello message (the one with the Wave button) off or on.
reactions:True Lets Supporter members' signature reactions work in this server. Off until you turn it on.
confess:#a-channel Opts the server into anonymous /confess and chooses where the confessions are posted.
preset:Creator community A ready-made start for a creator's server (use it with channel): sets the server up, turns the welcome message on in that channel and answers with a checklist of next steps. It creates nothing else.

If you give a channel, Sigil needs permission there to view the channel, send messages, embed links, attach files, add reactions, read the message history and use external emoji. If it cannot, /setup tells you which one is missing.

Step 3: look around

What most servers turn on first

  1. A welcome message, so new members see something friendly and your rules.
  2. Auto-roles, so a new member gets the right roles without a moderator.
  3. A role menu, so members choose their own game pings and pronouns.
  4. Counters and the Bulletin, which keep your channel list looking alive.
  5. Weave, a daily word game that gives people a reason to come back.
