Role menus
A message where members pick their own roles, built on the website with a live preview.
A role menu is a message where members choose their own roles: game pings, colours, pronouns, regions. Nobody has to ask a moderator. You need the Manage Roles permission to build one.
Build one
- Type
/rolemenu create, or open Role menus in the dashboard and press New role menu. It opens the builder on the website, with a live preview of the message as you type. A quick builder inside Discord is one button away if you prefer it. - Start from an idea (games, pronouns, pings, pick-one, interests) to fill in the words, or write your own.
- Add the roles from the list. Roles that cannot be handed out are greyed out with the reason.
- Choose how members pick, then choose a channel and press Save and post to Discord. You can also save now and post later.
To change a menu that is already posted, open it from the list and press Save and update the message. Right-clicking the menu, then Apps, then Sigil: Edit role menu, takes you to the same place.
The look of the message
Words above the card, a title, an explanation, a colour, a small heading and footer, a small picture (your server's icon, one from the web, or one you upload), a big picture, up to three extra headed sections and up to two link buttons such as Rules. A GIF upload is a Supporter feature; still pictures are open to everyone.
The roles
Each role can have:
- an emoji,
- its own wording and a short explanation,
- a time limit: a temporary role takes itself off after, say, seven days, which is good for an event ping.
Move them up and down to set the order.
How members choose
| Style | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Buttons | One button per role under the message. Best for a handful. |
| Dropdown | A list under the message. Choosing a role gives it, choosing it again takes it off. Fits 25. |
| Private list | One button opens a list only they see, with what they have ticked. |
You also set how many a person can pick: as many as they like, exactly one (choosing another swaps it), or up to a number. And you can limit the menu to members who already have a role, such as Verified.
Match my Sigil card
Turn on Sigil card and give each role something on Sigil profiles to stand for. A role called Valorant is tied to the Valorant game automatically; the Sigil card pick box on a role can tie it to any game, hobby, language or other pick. A member who presses Match my Sigil card is given the roles that match what is on their own profile. It only adds roles, only for the person pressing, and it is their choice to press it.
Safety
A role menu never hands out a role that has Administrator or any Manage permission (or Mention Everyone, Kick, Ban and similar), a role that belongs to a bot, Boosters or an integration, a role above Sigil's own role, or one above your own highest role unless you own the server. The builder tells you why a role was refused, and the rules are checked again on every press.
Sigil needs the Manage Roles permission and its role must sit above the roles on the menu. A menu goes away if its message or channel is deleted, and a deleted role leaves the menus it was on.
Troubleshooting
- A role is greyed out. Hover it for the reason. Usually it is above Sigil's role or carries a Manage permission.
- Pressing a button does nothing. Check Sigil's role is above the roles on the menu.
