Permissions Sigil asks for
What each permission is for, which commands need which, and what Sigil will never do.
Sigil asks for as little as it can. This page lists what it asks for when you add it, what a few commands need on top of that, and the limits it keeps even when it has a permission.
When you add the bot
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
| View Channel, Send Messages | To post in the channels you choose. |
| Embed Links, Attach Files | The welcome card, game boards and pictures are embeds and attachments. |
| Add Reactions, Use External Emojis | For signature reactions, and to use the support server's custom emoji. |
| Read Message History | So Sigil can work with the messages in the channel it posts in, for example when it clears a channel with /purge. |
| Manage Roles | Role menus, colour roles and auto-roles. You can untick it when you add the bot. |
Sigil never asks for Administrator.
Extra permissions for particular commands
Give these to Sigil's role (or to its role in one channel) only if you use the command.
| Command | Needs | Because |
|---|---|---|
/counters, /bulletin |
Manage Channels | They make a locked voice channel and rename it. |
/purge, /mediaonly |
Manage Messages | To delete messages. |
/keepup |
Manage Messages | It deletes each answer as soon as it has checked it, so nobody can copy it. |
/autothread, /mediaonly (thread mode) |
Create Public Threads, Send Messages in Threads | To start a thread under a message. |
| Invite tracking | Manage Server | Discord only shows a bot a server's invites if it has it. |
| Welcome, goodbye and auto-roles | The Server Members setting | Discord only tells a bot about members joining and leaving when this is on. |
/mediaonly, /bomb, /keepup |
The Message Content setting | Discord only shows uploads, link previews and typed words to a bot that has it. |
The last two rows are switches on Discord's side for the bot itself, not permissions you give in your server.
Limits Sigil keeps anyway
- Roles. A role menu, an auto-role or a colour role never hands out a role that has Administrator or any Manage permission (or Mention Everyone, Kick, Ban and similar), a role that belongs to a bot, Boosters or an integration, a role above Sigil's own, or, for the person setting it up, one above their own highest role unless they own the server. These checks run again every time a role is given, because roles change.
- Pings. A scheduled post can never ping
@everyoneor a person, and mentions inside a sticky message never ping anyone. - Who can change things. Admin commands need the matching Discord permission in your server, and the dashboard needs you to have signed in within the last day to change anything.
Taking something away
Removing a permission just stops the feature that needs it; nothing else breaks. If you remove Manage Roles, role menus and auto-roles stop working and everything else carries on.
