Welcome and goodbye messages
Greet new members with a card, your words and buttons, and say goodbye when they leave. Design it with a live preview.
When someone joins, Sigil can post a welcome in the channel you choose and ping the new member once. You design all of it in a private builder that shows the message exactly as it will look.
Turning it on
- Run
/setup channel:#welcome(or choose the channel on the dashboard's General tab). Without a channel there are no welcome cards at all. - Run
/welcome, or open the Welcome tab of the dashboard. - Press Send a test to see it in your channel, with you as the new member.
By default the welcome is a short greeting with a card and a Wave button. Anyone can press Wave; the welcome shows who waved, and the new member is told about the first wave. It is on for servers set up from now on; a server set up before it existed keeps it off until an admin turns it on with /setup welcome:True.
What you can change
The builder has four parts.
Message text. The line above the card, and a private message to the new member if you want one.
The card. The title, the words, the colour, a small picture (the new member's avatar or your server's icon), a big picture, an author line and a footer.
Where and when. The channel, on or off, whether the new member is pinged, whether the message removes itself after a minute, ten minutes, an hour or a day, and the test button.
Buttons, pings and extras. Keep or drop Wave, add up to two link buttons (for your rules, for instance), choose up to three roles to ping (a greeters' role, say), and turn Supporters' entrance cards on or off.
Variables
Type these anywhere in the text and they are filled in for each person:
| Variable | Becomes |
|---|---|
{user} |
A mention of the new member |
{name} |
Their name |
{server} |
Your server's name |
{count} |
How many members the server has |
{ordinal} |
Their number as an ordinal, like 1,204th |
{date} |
The date |
{channel1} to {channel3} |
Up to three channels you choose, so the welcome can point at your rules |
{roles} |
The roles you chose to ping, where you want them (otherwise they are added at the end) |
Pings go in the text above the card, because Discord never notifies anyone for a mention inside a card. The role has to be mentionable (or Sigil needs the Mention Everyone permission), and @everyone is never pinged.
Presets
Start from Classic, Friendly, Minimal, Rules first, Gamer or Cosy. You can preview a preset before you use it, then change anything.
Entrance cards
Supporter members can design their own entrance card on Edit profile. When they join a server with welcome cards set up, Sigil posts it in the welcome channel, in the same message. It is only posted for Supporters who switched it on, only in servers where an admin chose a welcome channel, and never more than a few times a minute in one server. You can turn entrance cards off for your server in the builder.
Goodbye messages
/goodbye opens the Goodbye section of the same builder. It is off until you turn it on. You choose the channel (the welcome channel if you do not), the text above the card and the card itself, with the same variables, and you can send a test.
- It never pings anyone.
- It is posted whenever Discord tells Sigil that someone is gone, which includes people who were kicked or banned.
- To stop a raid or a clean-up from flooding a channel, it posts only a few a minute.
What Sigil uses
Both messages use the fact that someone joined or left, their name and their picture. They need Sigil to be told about members joining and leaving; see Permissions.
Troubleshooting
- Nothing is posted. Check that a welcome channel is set, that the message is on, and that Sigil can post, embed links and attach files in that channel. The dashboard's Overview tab flags a channel Sigil cannot post in.
- The ping did not work. The role must be mentionable, and the ping has to be in the text above the card.
- A test works but real joins do not. Make sure the server has been set up with
/setupand the welcome is switched on.
